The 10th Consul General’s Cup Taekwondo Tournament, jointly hosted and organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vancouver and the British Columbia (BC) Taekwondo Association, was held successfully at the Richmond Olympic Oval on Saturday, October 10.
This event, the largest festival for Taekwondo practitioners in Western Canada, was attended by key local political figures including Consul General of Vancouver Lee Kwang-seok, Member of Parliament Parm Bains, and Richmond City Councillor Chak Au, as well as over 2,000 Taekwondo practitioners and spectators, filling the venue.
The competition on this day was divided into various events, including Poomsae and sparring. In both the Poomsae division, which showcased precise movements and discipline, and the sparring division, which featured thrilling kicks, the athletes displayed a high level of skill and fully demonstrated the abilities they had honed over time.
In particular, a spectacular special Taekwondo demonstration took place in the middle of the competition, drawing loud applause and cheers from the spectators and athletes in attendance with high-difficulty breaking techniques and dynamic performances.
In his congratulatory remarks, Consul General Lee Kwang-seok of the Republic of Korea in Vancouver reminded that “Taekwondo, our traditional martial art, serves as an important cultural bridge connecting Korea and Canada,” and expressed his hope that “cultural and sports exchanges and cooperation between Korea and Canada will continue to be strengthened in the future.”
Meanwhile, to commemorate ‘October Korean Culture Month in BC,’ the Consulate General operated various booths offering traditional Korean cultural experiences, such as Tuho (arrow throwing), wearing Hanbok, and making folding screens, within the competition venue. Participants and spectators visiting the stadium spent a meaningful time experiencing Korean culture firsthand, receiving a great response on-site.
A tournament official stated, “The athletes’ outstanding skills, spectacular demonstration performances, and Korean cultural experiences combined to create a meaningful festival where all participants could enjoy themselves together.”
