Running for Burnaby South-Metrotown… Reveals Economic and Livelihood Policy Achievements and Vision
Key figure in the enactment of the state legislature's first 'Korean Heritage Month Act'
Candidate Paul Choi, who served as a BC Legislator, Political Undersecretary for Trade at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, and Chairman of the Provincial Assembly's Finance and Government Services Committee during his previous term, gave an interview with Hana TV as he runs for the Burnaby South-Metrotown constituency. Candidate Choi, who possesses a unique background as a former police officer and a lawyer with a prosecutor background, expressed his determination for this general election based on his proven economic leadership and distinct pledges for the people's livelihoods.
Q. Please give us a brief introduction and explain the background behind your decision to run again in this week's general election.
Hello, I am Paul Choi, a candidate for the British Columbia Parliament for the Burnaby South-Metrotown district. During my previous term, I served as the Member of Parliament for this district and as the Parliamentary Secretary for Trade for Jobs and Economic Growth.
Our economy and society are currently facing significant uncertainty, with a multitude of challenges to address. We urgently need a strong government and the driving force to achieve substantial economic growth and provide unwavering support to residents and communities. I have decided to run again to ensure these critical tasks continue without interruption.
Q. You have played a significant role as the Special Envoy for Trade and Political Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry over the past two years. Could you please explain your major activities and achievements?
In addition, to diversify our economy's trade partners globally, we operated various export support programs such as the Export Navigator and Trade Accelerator, and established trade and investment representatives with over 50 staff members at key overseas locations to help local companies enter global markets.
Furthermore, B.C. led the "elimination of inter-provincial trade barriers (deregulation)," which is considered a groundbreaking regulatory innovation in Canadian history. It maximized domestic trade by concluding mutual recognition agreements with the federal government and other provinces and territories, and by passing the "Trade Recognition Act." Another major achievement is laying the foundation to expand public infrastructure by attracting billions of dollars in private investment to the province without burdening residents with tax money.
Q. Many voters are struggling most with the cost of living and the livelihood economy. What solutions have you devised so far, and what measures do you plan to implement in the future?
As Chair of the Finance and Government Services Committee, I traveled across British Columbia, meeting directly with thousands of residents and various organizations to discuss practical livelihood support measures.
Meanwhile, the state government has been working to make substantial expenditure reductions.
ICBC Auto Insurance Premiums:After lowering it to its lowest level in decades, it has remained frozen until now, and will continue the freeze for the next three years.
Complete Abolition of Bridge Tolls:We eliminated tolls that were a heavy burden for residents commuting long distances.
Abolition of MSP (Medical Insurance Premiums):We have completely abolished the state health insurance premiums, which were a burden on monthly household expenses.
$10 a day childcare:We are continuously expanding childcare support to alleviate the financial burden of child-rearing for working parents and to help them participate in economic activities.
My key pledges for people's livelihoods that I will pursue are also clear. I will push for fuel cost reductions that lower gasoline prices by up to 30 cents per liter, and I will firmly control grocery prices by limiting excessive profit margins set by major retailers on essential daily foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and cheese.
Q. Why is proven experience and leadership essential at this point in time?
For me, "action speaks louder than words" has always been the priority. Since becoming an adult, my entire life has been dedicated to serving the public. I served as a frontline police officer responsible for local security, and later, as a legal professional, I have devoted myself to public safety while working as a Crown Prosecutor and attorney. In the State Legislature, I served as Chair of the Finance Committee and a member of the Treasury Board, meticulously managing finances to ensure that residents' taxes are used in the most responsible and prudent manner.
Burnaby South-Metrotown needs competent workers who know how to get things done more than ever before. We have built the most new schools in Burnaby in decades and are steadily proceeding with the expansion of Burnaby Hospital, significantly increasing our bed capacity and medical infrastructure. The supply of below-market affordable housing is also at an all-time high. Building on these achievements, we will continue to build a Burnaby where residents can live with peace of mind.
Q. You enacted the ‘Korean Heritage Month Act’ for the first time in B.C. history. What is the background and significance of this act?
When I first immigrated to Canada in the mid-1990s, Koreans did not have a significant presence in mainstream society or politics. I, too, had a time when I wondered, "If I work hard here, what kind of future can I open up?"
I am deeply moved to see the elevated status of K-culture and Korea today. After being elected as a provincial legislator, I passed a bill designating October (including National Foundation Day) as ‘Korean Heritage Month’ (Bill M 210) to officially inform Canadian mainstream society of the pride and glorious culture of the Korean people and to commemorate it forever.
While the federal Senate motion (resolution) is merely a formal recognition, in British Columbia, it was enacted as a complete statute after undergoing all formal legislative procedures, following Ontario; therefore, it carries significant legal effect and symbolism.
We pursued this initiative with the hope of officially recording the dedication of our parents and the first generation, who toiled in harsh environments to establish a foundation, as part of the provincial government's history, and serving as a solid stepping stone for the next generation of Korean youth to take pride in their roots and realize their big dreams in Canadian society. In addition, we have officially designated 'Kimchi Day' and 'K-Food Day,' and are currently actively considering the establishment of a 'K-Pop Day' in cooperation with the Korean Cultural Association and others.
Q. Please share a word of encouragement with the active Hana TV Korean Youth Reporter Corps and the next generation.
The role of journalists is becoming increasingly important. Especially in today's world, where social media and online media are central, the value of journalism that views society with an objective and accurate perspective cannot be overemphasized.
If the Korean media has so far focused on delivering news from within the community, you, the members of the Korean Youth Reporter Corps, must go a step further and take on the role of a ‘bridge’ that confidently introduces and connects Korea’s outstanding culture and the strength of the Korean community to mainstream Canadian society. I sincerely support your activities and look forward to you leading a wonderful future with great pride.
Q. Finally, do you have any last words you would like to share with the voters?
It was the greatest honor of my life to be able to serve on behalf of the residents of Burnaby South-Metrotown and your families during my term.
I meet with residents in person at their doorsteps every day to listen to their voices regarding issues directly related to their lives, such as living costs, housing, education, childcare, and public safety. I will sincerely listen to your difficulties and become a politician who repays you with tangible ‘action and results.’ I ask for your continued support for the development of Burnaby and the greater leap forward of the Korean community. Thank you!
